Three Russians and a Ukrainian were fined $9.1 million by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for creating and maintaining a botnet to steal user information.
The four accused were all hit with charges of computer fraud, misuse, and money laundering as part of a larger conspiracy. Additionally, they were forced to pay $567,000 in reparations to the affected parties.
"This prosecution sends a message that we will utilize the full power of the law to prosecute those who design and run botnets," said Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski of the Justice Department's Criminal Division.
