Animoca Brands' subsidiary, Darewise Entertainment, is on the lookout for a new addition to their team, specifically a "Head of Degen Relationships." The role involves promoting the company's upcoming play-and-earn sci-fi civilization-building game, Life Beyond, in the crypto space by connecting with key opinion leaders, communities, and events.

The term "degen" is a slang word for "degenerate," and it refers to someone who buys an asset not because they believe it has value, but because they think others will buy it after them and speculate on the price swings. This move is in line with the growing trend of building communities and promoting projects in the web3 space, which has led to the creation of new roles in community engagement and influencer marketing.

As the market downturn of last year demonstrated, some NFT projects, such as Fractional, a startup that specializes in buying and selling fractionalized NFTs, have put out ads for "vibe managers" who could help spread positive sentiment and maintain hype around their projects. These positions typically go to individuals who already have a following in the crypto space, and being involved in a community can also open doors to new job opportunities.

However, working with influencers to promote projects and attract more retail investors has its share of criticisms, particularly when a project lacks a complete product. Those who invested in NFTs and tokens linked to over-hyped projects that didn't deliver, lost money.

Some have argued that these attempts to bring people together are a "insidious weaponization of the idea of community." Software engineer Molly White, who runs the crypto critic site Web3 is Going Great, said that "a lot of these projects plainly require a constant inflow of new suckers to prop up the prices of these tokens or NFTs or whatever the project is centered around."

This isn't the only role related to community that Darewise is hiring for, they are also looking for a "Head of Community" who will focus on building relationships with key community members and people who hold significant influence within the community. Other companies in the crypto space, such as Ethereum Foundation, Binance and Polygon, are also on the lookout for people to work in roles that involve community engagement.
