Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk agreed on a decentralized social network

As part of the litigation with Twitter's board of directors, personal correspondence between Elon Musk and a number of notable individuals was published. Among them was Jack Dorsey, who had recently been a member of the board himself.

It became known that in his correspondence Jack Dorsey expressed his opinion about how good it would be to abandon the currently accepted advertising model, which by its mere existence creates the possibility of attacks from advertisers and the government.

In the course of their conversation, it was suggested that Twitter be replaced by an open-source social network, along the lines of Signal. Or the creation of a new social network from scratch, where decentralization technologies would be used, so posts and comments would require a small fee for their placement (to avoid spam attacks).

Also, Elon Musk offered Anthony Rose, head of engineering at Matter Labs and a former SpaceX engineering manager, to head a possible project. Musk noted two things:

  • Freedom of speech in decentralization is a hot topic that has been discussed many times, but the issue with its implementation is still relevant.

  • Requirements for the technical characteristics of a system capable of supporting such a project are very high. This leads us to the fact that either you need to create a network of huge scale, or it will not be peer-to-peer, which excludes the very essence of the project.
